TODAY: Hundreds Rally in Support of a Fair Deal for Air Canada Workers

June 9, 2011

(Toronto) Hundreds of Air Canada workers and supporters will rally today at 1 p.m. at Toronto Pearson International Airport, including CAW National President Ken Lewenza.

Demonstrators are calling on Air Canada to end its attempt to slash the pension plan for existing and future workers and create a two-tier workforce, as well as a number of other concessions being demanded at the bargaining table.

The rally, organized by the CAW, is the final in a series of national demonstrations in major airport terminals over the last month, including demonstrations in Vancouver, downtown Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Winnipeg as well as events in area customer service call centres such as in Saint John, Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg and Calgary.

The rally at Pearson Airport occurs the day before the union will likely issue its 72 hour strike notice to Air Canada (required in federally regulated industries) –on Friday night, with a deadline set for Monday, June 13 at 11:59 p.m.

Although the strike notice may be issued, the union intends to negotiate right up to the deadline, with the intention of reaching a fair and equitable new collective agreement for members at Air Canada.

*CAW President Ken Lewenza will be addressing the crowd at 1 p.m. on the departures level.
